About Albert Tan
How I Got Into Data Science
My journey began during my final year project on human gesture recognition. Working with big data for this research was incredibly insightful—it showed me the many use cases of data and how much impact it could have. That project was the bridge between my Electrical Engineering background and the world of data science.
What fascinated me most was closing the gap between software and hardware. The research gave me a glimpse into the possibilities of data, and I knew this was the path I wanted to pursue.
What Makes Me Different
I have a unique cross-section between software development and data science. While many data scientists focus purely on the analytics side, I can build complete solutions—from the machine learning models to the web applications that deliver them to users.
My most exciting work has been deploying demand forecasting for retail use cases across multiple projects and regions. What I love most is the intersection between data science and web development—turning insights into applications that people can actually use.
My Tech Stack
I work with modern tools that let me build end-to-end AI solutions:
- Cloud & Deployment: GCP for infrastructure, Vercel for seamless deployments
- AI Frameworks: LangChain and LangGraph for building intelligent applications
- Web Development: Next.js for modern frontends, Flask for Python APIs
- Data Science: Python ecosystem with scikit-learn, PyTorch, and pandas
This combination lets me take projects from initial data exploration all the way to production-ready applications.
Beyond Data Science
When I'm not building AI applications, you'll find me exploring Melbourne's food scene with my partner. We're avid foodies who started @momentsimelb to document our culinary adventures.
What began as a simple idea to list all the restaurants we enjoyed on a website has become something special. The best part has been meeting restaurant and café owners and listening to their stories. It's reminded me that behind every great product—whether it's a machine learning model or a perfect coffee—there are passionate people with interesting stories to tell.
Let's Connect
I'm always interested in connecting with fellow data enthusiasts, engineers, and anyone working on interesting problems. Whether you're looking to collaborate on a project, discuss the latest in AI, or get recommendations for Melbourne's best restaurants, feel free to reach out through LinkedIn or email.
